captain will often ask the candidate during an Oral Exam, what
precautions having your vessel painted?;

Mask off all windows
(2)
Mask off all navigation lights
(3)
Place a cover over and mask the ships whistle
(4)
Take all lifesaving appliances and put them ashore to get serviced
(5)
Take all fire-fighting appliances and put them ashore to get
serviced
(6)
Put all wires/ropes/nets ashore
(7)
Have bare decks (ships painters are not known for lifting obstacles
to paint under them)
